Mid-Atlantic bloom time: summer - fall
Similar to the European Amanita caesarea of which it was once considered a supspecies, Amanita jacksonii was given its current name in 1984 by Canadian mycologist René Pomerleau.
Distinctive before its cap has opened by its tomato-colored egg shape, it is considered edible by most sources. Note that the closely related Half-Dyed Slender Caesar (Amanita hemibapha) is almost identical; these were once considered to be one species.
