Flowers have a very sweet fragrance.

The genus name is from the Geek epi and gaea, together meaning 'on the earth,' which reflects this plant's habit of hugging the ground tightly. The species name repens is Latin, meaning 'creeping' or 'crawling', refering to the plant's trailing or creeping habit.
