Dicentra cucullaria

Dutchman's Breeches

[ click on any image below to see larger version ]

Family: Fumariaceae

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: early April

As its common name indicates, the flowers on Dutchman's Breeches look like a pair of white pantaloons turned upside down.

Compare this to the closely related but less common Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis).

Purportedly it can cause cattle to stagger drunkenly if they graze on it because of some narcotic and toxic substances in this poppy-related genus.
